MARK GELDING’S SATURDAY ENSIGHT™
“The good news is your best bet can’t get a bad trip. The bad news is the jockey may still find one.”
|
|
Today’s Track & Barn Notes
Main track: Friday’s dirt races favored outside runners tracking from off the pace. No dirt race was won wire-to-wire.
Turf course: Speed was strong Friday, with three of four turf races won gate-to-wire. The rails move from 30 feet to 18 feet today, which may make the course play more fairly.
Jockeys and trainers: J.J. Hernandez and Umberto Rispoli are tied atop the jockey standings with six wins. Doug O’Neill leads the trainers with six victories.

RACE 9
$100K Daisycutter • 5 Furlongs Turf
Frank’s Matrix
#1 Saratoga Special — B: Nearly beat Gratefully in her first U.S. start and can rebound, but the rail and Rosario’s slow start to the meet are concerns.
#2 Bit’s Tiger Magic — B: A Del Mar turf winner last summer. J.J. Hernandez rides, but the class question remains.
#3 Can’t Sleep — A: Second off the layoff after a useful prep. Her best race came at Del Mar, and Jaramillo stays aboard.
#4 Tahini — A: Owns the right speed for a short turf sprint and just beat several of these at 8/1.
#5 Princesa Moche — C: Gets class relief, but her recent form and rider situation create doubts.
#6 Amorita — B: The lukewarm favorite is a contender but does not tower over the field and may be prepping for a longer race.
#8 Ripassare — C: Has sprint form but may be too far back in a race that could favor speed.
#9 Imaboutago — C: Needs a major improvement and may not receive enough pace help.
#10 Kuwaitya — A: Should move forward second off the layoff. Berrios is an excellent turf rider, making her a live 10/1 possibility.
FRANK’S GRADES:
A: 3, 4, 10 | B: 6, 1, 2 | C: 5, 9, 8
|
Ciaran’s Notes
#3 Can’t Sleep: Owns the second-highest power rating and won at this distance two starts ago. Use.
#4 Tahini: Two wins from four Del Mar starts and a live backup based on the Rispoli-Papaprodromou combination.
#6 Amorita: Ciaran’s current top pick. Her hillside speed and tendency to get caught late suggest five furlongs may be ideal.
#10 Kuwaitya: Berrios replaces Rosario, which Ciaran views as an upgrade. Include on backup tickets.

RACE 10
$400K Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) • 6 Furlongs Dirt
Frank’s Matrix
#1 Maximum Bourbon — B: Fast enough to win, but must go hard from the rail in a race loaded with speed.
#2 Listenupshance — C: Two-for-two at Del Mar and still improving, though the expected pace may work against him.
#3 Dr. Venkman — A: Loves Del Mar and should benefit from a pace battle. The six-furlong distance is the only concern.
#4 For All Mankind — X: Tactical but may not be fast enough against this Grade 1 group.
#5 Stronghold — B: Tactical, consistent and riding a two-race winning streak. Should be in striking position turning for home.
#6 Cornucopian — A: Comes off a dominant Grade 3 win and projects to receive the best stalking trip in the clear.
#7 Gold Sweep — B: A sneaky exotic contender who should get a favorable trip and offers a much better price than the favorites.
#8 Mad House — C: Owns major speed and an outside post, but must survive a likely pace battle.
#9 Moonlight — X: Looks more likely to use this race as preparation for the longer Pat O’Brien.
FRANK’S GRADES:
A: 6, 3 | B: 5, 7, 1 | C: 2, 8
|
Ciaran’s Notes
#3 Dr. Venkman: Loves Del Mar and the Glatt-Rispoli combination has been heating up.
#5 Stronghold: Top closer, winner of two straight and a strong exacta horse on top or underneath.
#6 Cornucopian: Top power rating, bullet works and a 39% Baffert-Hernandez combination. Ciaran’s key use.
#8 Mad House: Sharp local works and the rider change make him a possible backup-ticket inclusion.

RACE 11
$50K Optional Claiming / N1X • 1 1/16 Miles Turf
Frank’s Matrix
#1 Midnight Horizon — B: Likely needed her U.S. debut and should improve stretching out, though J.J. Hernandez moves elsewhere.
#2 Kikuride — C: Proven locally but now faces open company and showed little punch last time.
#3 Lady in Paris — A: Ran too well to lose in her U.S. debut and appears to have more upside than this group.
#4 Upcharge — C: Comes off a narrow starter win and now faces a much tougher field.
#5 Miso Phansy — C: Has back class but may need a career-best effort to defeat the top runners.
#7 America’s Mark — C: Lightly raced and consistent, but needs a career-best against open company.
#8 Bette Davis Eyes — A: Her last sprint looked like a prep. She stretches out second off the layoff and offers longshot appeal.
#9 Yoga Master — C: Has route form overseas but is difficult to trust after a poor trip as the favorite.
#10 Take Another Card — B: Rarely runs badly but has lost several close decisions and draws a difficult outside post.
#11 Quantum Innergy — X: Honest closer but has not run fast enough to win this type of race.
FRANK’S GRADES:
A: 3, 8 | B: 10, 1 | C: 5, 9, 2, 7, 4
|
Ciaran’s Notes
#3 Lady in Paris: Worked with Gold Phoenix and held her own. Just missed last time and is a single on one of Ciaran’s tickets.
#8 Bette Davis Eyes: Second start off the layoff after shipping from a top European track. Longshot-ticket candidate.
#10 Take Another Card: Top power rating and likely CAW horse. Rispoli takes over after Fresu chose Lady in Paris.
#4 Upcharge: Won last time and should be used somewhere on wider tickets.
