DEL MAR FRIDAY RACE 6
Frank’s Matrix & Ciaran’s Notes
There is no live show today,
but Frank and Ciaran have provided their complete analysis for a
wide-open and highly competitive Del Mar Race 6.
Mark Gelding’s Friday Ensight™
“When the owner says every horse in the race has a shot, that usually means
one of two things: it’s a great betting race—or he owns the horse.”
Race 6 Overview
$100,000 Optional Claiming / Conditional Allowance
Five Furlongs on Turf • Rails at 30 Feet
This is a deep turf sprint where several horses have a legitimate chance.
The Double Trouble Live crew will be rooting for Ciaran’s horse,
#5 Arrakis.
Frank’s Matrix
#1 VIRAT — 4/1
The seven-year-old ran too well to lose in a similar race here last July,
but he has not replicated that effort in several starts since. He returns
from a May freshening and should be ready to fire, but the rail draw and
expected trip are concerns.
GRADE: B
#2 THE OLD NINE — 15/1
He has looked like a different horse since being gelded and enters with
two consecutive victories. However, he now faces a much stronger group
and is winless in four starts over the Del Mar turf course.
GRADE: X
#3 INCANTO — 6/1
He ran two excellent races over this course and distance last year,
finishing second behind stakes-quality competition both times. He may
offer an attractive price if bettors overlook those strong local efforts.
GRADE: A
#4 GABALDON — 6/1
Jose D’Angelo won a turf race here Thursday with a horse whose form
looked ordinary on paper. Gabaldon has speed and appears best at five
furlongs, but he may be slightly slower than the main contenders.
GRADE: B
#5 ARRAKIS — 6/1
The sentimental play for Ciaran is also a legitimate win contender.
Arrakis likes Del Mar and ran the fastest six-furlong turf sprint of the
Santa Anita Autumn Meet two starts ago. The questions are whether he is
ready following the November layoff and whether Joel Rosario can deliver
the right trip.
GRADE: B
#6 BAD UNCLE BARRY — 5/1
Mark Glatt excels with comeback runners, so this horse should be ready
despite the nine-month layoff. He missed by only a nose at a similar
level before the break, retains Umberto Rispoli and projects to receive
an ideal stalking trip.
GRADE: A
#7 IRISH ROYALTY — 7/2
He attended the pace and held on to win at a similar level two starts
ago, then remained competitive for part of the Daytona Stakes. He owns
a victory over this course and distance, although his placement for the
$100,000 claiming tag is worth noting.
GRADE: B
#8 LONESOME STEW — 5/1
The second Glatt runner returns from a May freshening. Two starts ago,
he successfully returned from a year-long layoff to win at Santa Anita.
His only previous try over this Del Mar course and distance produced a
victory, making this an excellent rebound spot.
GRADE: A

Ciaran’s Notes
“Very tough race. I own a horse, and they all have a shot.”
Ticket Strategy
Single #5 Arrakis on one ticket and use ALL on another.
#1 VIRAT — 4/1:
Berrios rides for Dan Blacker. Virat drops in class, races for the
$100,000 tag and owns the top power rating. He has sharp workouts and
has won two of six starts over this course. Use.
#2 THE OLD NINE — 15/1:
He has won two consecutive races going six furlongs but remains winless
at Del Mar. Edwin Maldonado rides this early-speed horse.
#3 INCANTO — 6/1:
Kazushi Kimura rides for Peter Eurton. The barn has been cold, but the
horse owns two second-place finishes from three starts here.
#4 GABALDON — 6/1:
Heriberto Figueroa rides for Jose D’Angelo. He ships from Tampa and
Gulfstream, shows bullet workouts and takes a major class jump. He
appears slower than some of the others, but D’Angelo placed him
aggressively for this race.
#5 ARRAKIS — 6/1
“Arrakis is my horse—I own the right ass cheek. He is one-for-three
here and is all class. Foot issues appeared early in the year, and we
have been trying to find the right race for him since June. He loves
this distance, and this is not a prep.”
“Fresu left for the Glatt horse, and we get Joel Rosario. It looks like
Joel is getting into Phil’s rotation, so I hope the Rosario I was
expecting shows up. Stalk and win.”
#6 BAD UNCLE BARRY — 5/1:
Rispoli rides for Glatt. The horse has followed a win-second-win-second
pattern and has a win and two additional in-the-money finishes from four
starts at Del Mar.
#7 IRISH ROYALTY — 7/2:
Kimura rides for Doug O’Neill. This is another serious speed horse who
could play a major role in the early pace.
#8 LONESOME STEW — 5/1:
Antonio Fresu stays aboard this Glatt runner, whom he has ridden since
2023. Fresu had originally been expected to ride Arrakis before a
miscommunication occurred. Do not automatically upgrade this horse or
downgrade Arrakis solely because of that rider decision.
